A) Visual Journalism: MegsRadio.FM
Meg’s Radio is a local music streaming service based in Ithaca, New York. I created this short documentary about Meg’s Radio with two other students. I filmed performances, arranged interviews, and edited the project. In addition, I am also part of the outreach and development team for Meg’s Radio.
B) Nonprofit Video Production: The Blueprint
The Blueprint is a college readiness program for students at Hammond High School in Hammond, Indiana. Only 12.9% of seniors at Hammond High are expected to graduate college in four years and The Blueprint hopes to use educators to not only enable students to apply to college, but to also graduate. I created a storyboard and assisted with the editing and filming of this video.
C) Music and Investigations: WICB Radio
Ithaca College’s radio station, WICB, is the number one radio station in the nation. I have been both the Assistant Music and News Director for WICB.
As Assistant Music Director, I contacted promoters, listened to 10-15 CDs a week, and decided what music to add to the radio station. Every Monday from 8-9pm EST, I hosted The New Music Show. During this specialty show, I would play tracks from the five or six artists the station added during that week. While in this position, I created a new segment to The New Music Show: Artists Interviews. In addition to adding new artists to the station, the show would also air exclusive interviews with these musicians.
As Assistant News Director, I came up with story ideas and edited packages for Ithaca Now, a weekly investigative news show that airs every Sunday at 7pm EST on WICB. My story on the Cayuga’s Watchers, a Cornell program that prevents sexual assault and physical damage at fraternity parties, won the Syracuse Press Club Award for “Best Radio News Story” and received second place at the Society of Professional Journalists National Conference for “Best Radio News Story.”
D) Finding Free Time: Volunteer Projects
Rockopelli Music Festival
Rockopelli is an all-ages festival in Northwest Indiana that uses local bands to raise money for local charities. I work in the promotions and outreach department for the festival. I also photograph and document the annual event, which typically raises $15,000-$20,000 for Indiana charities.
180 Degrees Consulting
I am the Consulting Director for 180 Degrees Consulting, an organization that offers pro bono consulting for nonprofits in Ithaca. In my past two years with 180 Degrees Consulting, I have worked on a marketing campaigns, web design, and re-branding with nonprofits in Ithaca.
MacCormick Secure Center Literary Magazine
I helped to create a literary magazine with inmates at the MacCormick Secure Center in Brooktondale, New York. Myself and other students from Ithaca College work with the MacCormick participants, who are youth felony offenders, to share poetry, drawings, and other exercises that can be printed in the magazine.
